Materials Science and Engineering & X Double Major Programme
Approved by the Senate of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), CUHK and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen(CUHK-Shenzhen) have jointly launched three Collaborative Double Major Programmes(CDMP) over the 2023–2025 academic years: “Interdisciplinary Data Analytics & X”, “Aerospace Science and Earth Informatics & X”, and “Materials Science and Engineering & X”. These programmes adopt an innovative “Two Campuses & Double Major” model, establishing a new paradigm for talent development.
The two campuses admit students respectively into the CDMPs. During the four-year programme, students attend classes and participate in learning and research activities at both the Hong Kong campus and the Shenzhen campus, fulfilling the course requirements of both majors. A bachelor’s degree of CUHK will be awarded with two majors printed on the degree certificate.
Guided by the University's strategic vision, the CDMPs provide students with an interdisciplinary and cross-campus platform. By integrating the high-quality resources from both campuses with the strategic advantages of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, CDMPs empower students to expand global perspectives and diversify academic and career pathways.
Materials Science and Engineering, as a core discipline in the development of modern science and technology, converges not only with basic sciences such as physics, chemistry, and biology, but also with frontier fields including new energy, electronic engineering, and biomedicine. During the four-year programme, students will pursue a major in Materials Science and Engineering along with another X major based on their interests and career goals, thereby building a systematic, solid, and personalised knowledge framework.
The curriculum design covers core knowledge such as fundamentals of materials science and materials characterisation, alongside characteristic interdisciplinary courses like artificial intelligence and material design, as well as biomedical materials. Through integrated experimental training, research projects, and innovation competitions, students' interdisciplinary knowledge and practical innovation capabilities are enhanced. Relying on advanced research platforms and distinguished faculty, the programme provides students with abundant academic resources and international development opportunities, facilitating their growth in academic and professional fields.
With a solid professional foundation and a broad interdisciplinary vision, graduates will apply their expertise across diverse fields like scientific research innovation, technology research and development, and engineering management. They will gain a competitive edge particularly in key strategic national priority sectors such as new energy, biomedicine, and intelligent manufacturing.
Both universities are supervised by the same Senate, sharing the same academic structure and curriculum design. Graduates of CUHK(SZ) are awarded degrees of CUHK, the same as those awarded to CUHK graduates.
