“1+1+1” Joint Collaboration Fund
To strengthen collaborative innovation in industry, academia, and research across Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau, accelerate the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area International Technology Innovation Center, and effectively leverage the combined strengths of CUHK and CUHK(SZ) (hereinafter referred to as “the two universities”), the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province (GDST) and the two universities signed a MOU in May 2024.
From 2024 to 2026, the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province (GDST) will allocate RMB 10 million annually as seed funding to partnered universities in Guangdong. CUHK (SZ) will contribute at least RMB 10 million each year, and CUHK in Hong Kong will invest no less than HKD 10 million annually. Together, this funding will create a seed fund to implement the Guangdong-Hong Kong universities "1+1+1" Joint Funding Program, supporting impactful projects aligned with the economic and social development needs of the Greater Bay Area.
Research Areas: Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Economics, Finance and Logistics, Medicine and Life Sciences, Aerospace and Geoinformatics, New Materials, New Energy, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics etc.
General R&D Projects | |
Brief Introduction | The aim of the fund is to expand research cooperation and cultivate collaborative teams between CUHK and CUHK(SZ), in order to achieve innovative and high-level research outcomes at the international academic frontiers and lay the foundation for undertaking major national strategic tasks. |
Support Directions | The fund will focus on supporting research projects in key areas including artificial intelligence, data science, economics and finance, logistics, medical and life sciences, public policy, electronic information, and sustainability that are relevant to the development of strategic emerging industries in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. |

Platform Development Projects | |
Brief Introduction | Platform fund will support the Guangdong-Hong Kong Joint Laboratory and a series of conferences and workshops jointly hosted by CUHK and CUHK(SZ). |
Support Directions | I. Targeting at national, provincial or municipal-level Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao joint scientific research platform, the Collaboration Fund will serve as a seed fund. Priority fields and directions include, but not limited to, artificial intelligence, big data, and life and medical science. II. The Collaboration Fund will support a series of conferences and workshops jointly organised by the two universities and held alternately in Hong Kong and Shenzhen. |

Brief Introduction | The two campuses will operate under the strategic positioning of "one brand, two campuses," leveraging their respective disciplinary and regional advantages. By utilizing an international talent development mechanism and implementing projects focused on talent training, we aim to attract and cultivate talents for basic research and applications in areas of national importance , particularly in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. |
Support Directions | Include but not limited to: joint professorial appointments, Joint Postdoctoral Fellow Supervision, Joint PhD Supervision, Double Major 2+2 Programmes, and joint undergraduate research projects, etc. |
